Well it’s balanced due to its mass and the mass of earth. It’s in orbit around the earth. If it were further away it would eventually leave earths orbit and if closer would possibly eventually collide with earth. Run a tap and put an object close to the stream of water. You’ll notice the water slight moves towards the object. This is the gravitational pull between the water and the object.

It is difficult to say exactly how far away the moon is, but something like 250,000 miles is probably not that too far off.
